Summer @ Sorrento - A Christianity to Call Home

Territorial Acknowledgment

St George’s Cadboro Bay respectfully acknowledges the land we stand and pray on. The soil here holds the history and footsteps of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples. On the traditional territory of the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples, we uphold the hopeful and healing spirit of reconciliation. We promise to walk with truth and love in those footprints that connect and ground us.

Reminder : Electronic Collection Plate

To those of you who have not yet submitted the PAR Authorization form, please Click HERE. Follow the instruction and return to the church office to the attention of the Envelope Secretary, Elaine.

Any forms received after Sunday, February 5th – 10 am service will need to be scanned, and sent to givings@stgeorgecadborobay.ca, in order to start new withdrawals on March 20th.

The electronic collection plate, as currently administered by our Diocese will end on February 28, 2023. The Diocese does not have the staffing capacity to continue administering the system for the entire Diocese any longer. Extensive research was performed on the available options and the Diocese found that the PAR system administered by the United Church is by far the most cost-effective system available. In accordance with the Diocese’s recommendation, we are using the United Church system.

Thank you for using the new system for your contributions to our General Funding of our Parish. Your envelope number remains the same. Your contributions to Monthly Outreach Programs will continue through using your numbered Blue envelopes.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Treasurer Lawrence at treasurer@stgeorgecadborobay.ca.

THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA STUDENT SOCIETY
 FOOD BANK & FREE STORE

https://uvss.ca/foodbank/

Your Social Justice and Outreach Team has chosen the University of Victoria’s Food Bank as the agency to support during the month of February. Information about this agency was taken from the website above…

 · The UVSS Food Bank & Free Store is run by a team of dedicated staff and volunteers and offers all UVic students access to food essentials and free household items.

· With the rising costs of tuition, housing, childcare, and food, we do what we can to provide essential support to undergrad and grad students. Extra resources are available for students’ supporting families.

· Every week, hundreds of UVic students come to the Food Bank & Free Store.

· The UVSS Food Bank and Free Store is a community space that supports students by supplementing basic food and other supplies.

The Social Justice and Outreach Team ask for your prayers and donations to support this agency during February.

St George's Rocks - One Visitor's Impression

Last Sunday one of our visitors was retired Anglican priest, Ken Gray.  Ken will have been known to many of us from his ministry here in the Diocese; it was lovely to welcome him and his wife, Kathie, back to the island.  Ken published his impressions of St George's 10 o'clock service in his blog and it provides an interesting read.

Reflections on the readings for Sunday, February 5, 2023
Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany [Proper 5]
(Your parish may occasionally opt to use different readings.)

Greetings all,

All of these readings answer a question in different ways. The question is - what would a real spirituality look like? Isaiah says that it’s much more than mere ritual observance. The Psalmist says it will show itself in acts of generosity and justice. Paul tells the Corinth community that power and intellectual brilliance are not ultimate values. Jesus tells us our spirituality should possess integrity and it should issue in action. Together the readings develop these criteria.

As always, blessings on you and those whom you love.

A Christianity to Call Home

A Christianity to Call Home

Summer @ Sorrento

August 6-12 (Week 5)

Recent census data reveals that over half of the population in BC identify as ‘no religion.’ People who have spent some or all of their life in Christianity feel less and less at home there. For 60 years, many have imagined that Christianity isn’t so much dying as going through a once in an epoch shift.

Join Bp Anna and Rev Christine for a week of theological exploration towards A Christianity to Call Home. We’ll revisit some of the progressive theological texts of the 20th century (Religionless Christianity, Secular City, Honest to God, Comfortable Pew) to see what they have to say to us 60 years later. We’ll also tune into some of the theological voices of our own age (Richard Rohr, Ilia Delio, James Smith, Christina Cleveland, Kate Bowler and others) to see what new life-giving theology is emerging in these turbulent 2020s.
