Territorial Acknowledgment

St George’s Cadboro Bay respectfully acknowledges the land we stand and pray on. The soil here holds the history and footsteps of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples. On the traditional territory of the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples, we uphold the hopeful and healing spirit of reconciliation. We promise to walk with truth and love in those footprints that connect and ground us.

Transforming Tradition - A Bible Study

Join us for 3 Wednesday mornings in Lent (March 8, 15 and 22) to explore various critical ways of reading the bible while we explore the transformative time of the Restoration following the Babylonian exile. What principles can we learn from our bible forebears about transforming the traditions we've received for a new time?

We gather with coffee, tea and snacks around 9:45am before beginning the program at 10am. No experience necessary!

Community Events Campaign

Community Events Campaign

Our desire and our need for community connection is as great now as it's ever been. We continue to adjust to changes in our parish as we journey out of covid-era isolation and restrictions. In former days, many people found meaning and connection through large fundraising events. The dissipation of energy for those has left a gap in our ministry.

This year we're initiating a different approach to social, community events within and beyond the parish. It involved 2 aspects: events themselves and funding.

We have already gathered this year to celebrate Shrove Tuesday by visiting over pancakes and sausage. A small group is scheduled to meet soon to imagine, discuss and plan opportunities to gather, beyond worship and our existing groups. Please let Christine know if you're interested in this.

For funding, we are asking you to donate specifically to "Community Events Campaign."This can be done by indicating so on your regular envelope or cheque, by using the "Community Events" envelopes (please include your regular envelope number) or online through the "donate" button on the website (please choose "Community Events" tab).

Along with considering how much you value opportunities for connection, you might consider how much you would spend in a year for Sunday coffee-time, events like Shrove Tuesday pancakes and the large fundraisers like Spring Fling and Christmas Fair. We will be retiring the cash "basket" at such gatherings, so we can focus on practicing hospitality in inclusive and compassionate community.

We are grateful for your presence and participation in St. George's, and your willingness to give in this different way.

THE UNIVERSITY OF VICTORIA STUDENT SOCIETY
 FOOD BANK & FREE STORE

https://uvss.ca/foodbank/

Your Social Justice and Outreach Team has chosen the University of Victoria’s Food Bank as the agency to support during the month of February. Information about this agency was taken from the website above…

 · The UVSS Food Bank & Free Store is run by a team of dedicated staff and volunteers and offers all UVic students access to food essentials and free household items.

· With the rising costs of tuition, housing, childcare, and food, we do what we can to provide essential support to undergrad and grad students. Extra resources are available for students’ supporting families.

· Every week, hundreds of UVic students come to the Food Bank & Free Store.

· The UVSS Food Bank and Free Store is a community space that supports students by supplementing basic food and other supplies.

The Social Justice and Outreach Team ask for your prayers and donations to support this agency during February.

Coffee and Conversation

Coffee and Conversation

Saturday, March 4, 2023

The Women’s group will meet on Saturday, March 4 at 10:00 am in the Narthex. We will have another opportunity to hear the story of St. George’s led by Jeanette Muzio. A year ago we heard some of the early history as recalled by Lillian Bailey. We have light refreshments, muffins, cheese, crackers, and fruit. This is a time to build and strengthen relationships.

ON GOING REQUEST:

ON GOING REQUEST:

The Social Justice and Outreach group recently received a special request from the Shelbourne Community Kitchen for shopping bags to distribute their groceries in. This is now a continuing request for the reusable grocery bags for the pantry program.

The perfect bags are the classic Thrifty's or Fairway bags (giant Wal-Mart bags and liquor store style bags are both too big and too small for them to make use of).

So, St George’s if you are able to continue to help with rounding up some reusable bags, that would be greatly appreciated by the Kitchen. They can be placed with the weekly food items offered at the Altar.

With grateful thanks…. The Social Justice and Outreach Team.

A Ukrainian family is currently looking for at least one year accommodation

our Ukrainian family (scheduled to arrive in Victoria next week) who are presently very keen to find some modest accommodation for their family of three: husband, wife and teenage girl.  The husband is now a post-doctoral student starting in the School of Public Administration at the University of Victoria. Their needs are very modest, as you might assume. They would love to find accommodation in another family’s home (such as a basement or garden suite) or an apartment or another type of housing that you might have in mind.  If anyone has such accommodation, knows of someone that does, or you have any related ideas, please kindly contact Ted and Carol Sheldon: tedwsheldon@gmail.com or cell phone at 778-677-7045.  Much appreciation for your consideration.

Reflections on the readings for Sunday, February 26, 2023
First Sunday in Lent, Year A
(Your parish may occasionally opt to use different readings.)

Greetings all,

Got what you may think a good idea. A number of you have expressed appreciation of the odd quote I attach to the notes, so I've selected quotes for each of the Lenten Sundays. Some of course you may know but not all of you will know all of them - I say hopefully! And even if you do, it’s not bad to be reminded of a good thing. Here’s the first of two quotes by Monica Furlong. For some years she wrote in the Church Times. She writes here of a moment of spiritual experience. I think its value is in its very ordinariness. Seems to me the spirituality of something emerges when ordinariness becomes extraordinary. It’s from her book “Travelling In”...

"During the two years before and after I was twenty I had two experiences that led to religious conversion. The first occurred when I was waiting at a bus stop on a rainy afternoon. It was opposite the Odeon cinema, outside the station, and I was surrounded by people, shops, cars. A friend was with me. Suddenly for no apparent reason everything looked different. Everything I could see shone, vibrated, throbbed with joy and with meaning. I knew that it had done this all along and would go on doing it, but that usually I couldn’t see it. It was all over in a minute or two. I climbed on to the bus, saying nothing to my friend. It seemed impossible to explain.  - and sat stunned with astonishment and happiness.”
(Monica Furlong, from  “Travelling In”)

I will attach the second of those two experiences next week.

Blessings to you.
Herb

A Christianity to Call Home

A Christianity to Call Home

Summer @ Sorrento

August 6-12 (Week 5)

Recent census data reveals that over half of the population in BC identify as ‘no religion.’ People who have spent some or all of their life in Christianity feel less and less at home there. For 60 years, many have imagined that Christianity isn’t so much dying as going through a once in an epoch shift.

Join Bp Anna and Rev Christine for a week of theological exploration towards A Christianity to Call Home. We’ll revisit some of the progressive theological texts of the 20th century (Religionless Christianity, Secular City, Honest to God, Comfortable Pew) to see what they have to say to us 60 years later. We’ll also tune into some of the theological voices of our own age (Richard Rohr, Ilia Delio, James Smith, Christina Cleveland, Kate Bowler and others) to see what new life-giving theology is emerging in these turbulent 2020s.
