Territorial Acknowledgment

St George’s Cadboro Bay respectfully acknowledges the land we stand and pray on. The soil here holds the history and footsteps of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples. On the traditional territory of the Songhees, Esquimalt and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples, we uphold the hopeful and healing spirit of reconciliation. We promise to walk with truth and love in those footprints that connect and ground us.

Transforming Tradition - A Bible Study

Join us for 3 Wednesday mornings in Lent (March 8, 15 and 22) to explore various critical ways of reading the bible while we explore the transformative time of the Restoration following the Babylonian exile. What principles can we learn from our biblical forebears about transforming the traditions we've received for a new time?

We gather with coffee, tea and snacks around 9:45am before beginning the program at 10am. No experience necessary! Bring a bible if you have one!

Spring roster is in development

Ever wondered what it would be like to administer a chalice for communion? Read a passage of scripture? Count the offering? Greet people as they arrive for church? Offer prayers on behalf of the community? Now's the time to give it a try - again, or for the first time! Training available for all roles!

The spring roster (April-June) for many of our Sunday ministries is currently in development. For more information, please contact one of the Fisher's (Gary or Darlene) at darbyfish50@gmail.com or gcfisher1962@gmail.com

Community Events Campaign

Community Events Campaign

Our desire and our need for community connection is as great now as it's ever been. We continue to adjust to changes in our parish as we journey out of covid-era isolation and restrictions. In former days, many people found meaning and connection through large fundraising events. The dissipation of energy for those has left a gap in our ministry.

This year we're initiating a different approach to social, community events within and beyond the parish. It involved 2 aspects: events themselves and funding.

We have already gathered this year to celebrate Shrove Tuesday by visiting over pancakes and sausage. A small group is scheduled to meet soon to imagine, discuss and plan opportunities to gather, beyond worship and our existing groups. Please let Christine know if you're interested in this.

For funding, we are asking you to donate specifically to "Community Events Campaign."This can be done by indicating so on your regular envelope or cheque, by using the "Community Events" envelopes (please include your regular envelope number) or online through the "donate" button on the website (please choose "Community Events" tab).

Along with considering how much you value opportunities for connection, you might consider how much you would spend in a year for Sunday coffee-time, events like Shrove Tuesday pancakes and the large fundraisers like Spring Fling and Christmas Fair. We will be retiring the cash "basket" at such gatherings, so we can focus on practicing hospitality in inclusive and compassionate community.

We are grateful for your presence and participation in St. George's, and your willingness to give in this different way.

A Ukrainian family is currently looking for at least one year accommodation

A Ukrainian family is currently looking for at least one year accommodation

our Ukrainian family (scheduled to arrive in Victoria next week) who are presently very keen to find some modest accommodation for their family of three: husband, wife and teenage girl.  The husband is now a post-doctoral student starting in the School of Public Administration at the University of Victoria. Their needs are very modest, as you might assume. They would love to find accommodation in another family’s home (such as a basement or garden suite) or an apartment or another type of housing that you might have in mind.  If anyone has such accommodation, knows of someone that does, or you have any related ideas, please kindly contact Ted and Carol Sheldon: tedwsheldon@gmail.com or cell phone at 778-677-7045.  Much appreciation for your consideration.

Reflections on the readings for Sunday, March 12, 2023
Third Sunday in Lent, Year A
(Your parish may occasionally opt to use different readings.)

Greetings all,

Words poured from Thomas Merton, deep and mystical, prose and poetry, yet fascinating and comprehensible to millions of Christians. He lived as a hermit on the vast acres of Gethsemani Abbey in Kentucky. His Abbot once remarked that he had to be the only abbot in the world who was the superior of a hermit monk who came down each morning to the abbey office with two large suitcases to pick up his worldwide mail!

The following passage is from one of his books:
In Louisville, at the corner of Fourth and Walnut, in the center of the shopping district, I was suddenly overwhelmed with the realization that I loved all these people, that they were mine and I theirs, that we could not be alien to one another even though we were total strangers. It was like waking from a dream of separateness, of spurious self-isolation in a special world, the world of renunciation and supposed holiness…. Not that I question the reality of my vocation, or of my monastic life; but the conception of "separation from the world” that we have in the monastery too easily presents itself as a complete illusion: …. This sense of liberation from an illusory difference was such a relief and such a joy to me that I almost laughed out loud. And I suppose my happiness could have taken form in the words: “Thank God, thank God that I am like other men, that I am only a man among others”.
Thomas Merton, Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander

Blessings
Herb

A Christianity to Call Home

A Christianity to Call Home

Summer @ Sorrento

August 6-12 (Week 5)

Recent census data reveals that over half of the population in BC identify as ‘no religion.’ People who have spent some or all of their life in Christianity feel less and less at home there. For 60 years, many have imagined that Christianity isn’t so much dying as going through a once in an epoch shift.

Join Bp Anna and Rev Christine for a week of theological exploration towards A Christianity to Call Home. We’ll revisit some of the progressive theological texts of the 20th century (Religionless Christianity, Secular City, Honest to God, Comfortable Pew) to see what they have to say to us 60 years later. We’ll also tune into some of the theological voices of our own age (Richard Rohr, Ilia Delio, James Smith, Christina Cleveland, Kate Bowler and others) to see what new life-giving theology is emerging in these turbulent 2020s.
