Ministry DeveloperNew part-time staff position We are pleased to announce that Leslie Flynn will be joining us, beginning May 15, on a limited (8 month), part-time basis. Leslie's role as "Ministry Developer" will be to undertake a variety of special projects supporting the overall ministry of the parish. This will likely include sharing in communications and some administrative duties. We are grateful for support from the Diocese that helps make the position possible. Leslie is well known in this community, having been a member and former staff person in a different role. She is entering her final year of studies at VST as she moves towards ordination in the church. We are so happy to renew our ministry journey with her in a new way. |

John Albert Hall ColloquiumLaw, Land, Religion and Reconciliation - May 4-6 This workshop will explore the implications of the existential shifts in religious life for the stewardship of religious property in contemporary Canada. What are the moral and religious obligations of a religious community that has a lot of assets, deeply-felt religious and social commitments, but few congregants? Why (if at all) is it important for religious communities to honour the wishes of donors from generations past? Whose voices should guide decisions about the future management of institutional property? Where do tax considerations and registered charity status fit in? How are different religious communities responding to changing social realities in Canada in terms of their property use, and what can we learn from these experiences? There are talented scholars, clergy, religious institutional staff, and policy-makers working on these questions, and we will gather a cohort to explore and examine the intersecting issues they raise. We invite you to register for this exciting event of May 4-6, 2023, if you are planning to attend in person. Refreshments will be provided for in-person audience. Treasure's First Quarter Financial Report 2023by Lawrence Saracuse Treasurer’s Summary of our First Quarter of 2023 The First Quarter (January 01 through March 31, 2023) has quite favourable financial results. INCOME: Actual $88,722 against Budget $78,600 resulting in Positive Variance $10,122 EXPENSE: Actual $75,740 against Budget $81,700 resulting in Positive Variance $5,960 NET INCOME (Surplus/Deficit) Actual $12,982 against Budget (-$3,100) resulting in Positive Variance $16,082 One INCOME area that could be improved upon is the new Social/Community Events Donations. Its tally is $5,926 against our annual target of $15,000. This new way of funding all Social and Community Events asks that we all pitch in whatever we might likely spend over the year for events ranging from after service Coffee Times, to Pancake dinners, to (former) fund raising events like Spring Flings. Our EXPENSE accounts are mostly under spent. That said, there are some exceptions that are being monitored, and it IS early in the year. Thank you for your ongoing support of our many parish ministries. |

Wonderful Wednesdays: MayStudying the New Testament Join us for 4 Wednesdays in May (3, 10, 17, 24) to take a little romp through the New Testament, with Lynn Mills as our guide. We will set the New Testament in its historical timeline, looking at what books were included in the canon, review various critical methods of biblical study, and see how they apply to the Gospels, Acts and letters. Bring your questions and your bible (if you have one)! We gather at 9:45am with coffee, tea and snacks and begin our study at 10am. Lynn Mills is a graduate of the Master of Arts in Theological Studies program at the Vancouver School of Theology and has completed a PhD at Trinity College Dublin, researching cleansing by water and spirit in the Dead Sea Scrolls and New Testament. The Shelbourne Community Kitchen has a special request for May….
The Shelbourne Kitchen tells us…… "Summer is when our donations dip to the lowest all year but it's also a time when many families access our services whose children would normally receive school meals throughout the week. Last year we launched this campaign and encouraged local schools to collect donations for The Kitchen with great success. This year we are encouraging schools as well as community partners to participate.” For more infomation visit:

A Christianity to Call HomeSummer @ Sorrento August 6-12 (Week 5) Recent census data reveals that over half of the population in BC identify as ‘no religion.’ People who have spent some or all of their life in Christianity feel less and less at home there. For 60 years, many have imagined that Christianity isn’t so much dying as going through a once in an epoch shift. Join Bp Anna and Rev Christine for a week of theological exploration towards A Christianity to Call Home. We’ll revisit some of the progressive theological texts of the 20th century (Religionless Christianity, Secular City, Honest to God, Comfortable Pew) to see what they have to say to us 60 years later. We’ll also tune into some of the theological voices of our own age (Richard Rohr, Ilia Delio, James Smith, Christina Cleveland, Kate Bowler and others) to see what new life-giving theology is emerging in these turbulent 2020s. CLICK HERE for registration information for this and all of Sorrento programs. |

Reflections by Herbert O'Driscoll
Reflections on the readings for Sunday, April 30, 2023 Greetings all, “Spirituality is often discussed in such general terms that no attention is given to either women or gender. If spiritual practice and understanding relate to all of life, then one of the most significant markers of human life is gender, and the difference it makes to spiritualty. But gender perspectives remain often hidden and unacknowledged in writings on spirituality. Gender is not simply a word that stands for women, though it concerns both women and men, bears on their relations with each other, and affects the power and influence they hold over each other. Yet as in most areas of life men have usually defined what counts as spirituality, who can practice and teach it, who holds spiritual authority, and what the spiritual life is all about. And this has had a deep impact on the spiritual lives of women. Blessings on your ministry.
